Jarret Merschman has been a laboratory technician in the HLA Laboratory at Mayo Clinic since 2022 after graduating from the University of North Dakota in December, 2021. He entered this role after multiple years of epigenetic research at the University of North Dakota, focusing on histone modifications and DNA methylation patterns in inflammatory genes in mammalian tissue post-infection by viral and bacterial pathogens. He came to Mayo Clinic during a gap period, after which he intends to pursue an MD-PhD degree. His primary focus was to try and understand the intricacies of HLA due to its complex genetics and clinical significance. During his relatively short tenure, he has achieved academic appointment in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and focuses heavily on education in the laboratory. Using his laboratory background, he focuses on technical education for other technicians, as well as modular training for rotating physicians and students.
