Dr. Hurley is Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Oncology and Microbiology & Immunology at Georgetown University in Washington DC. Her primary research focused on HLA and its role in unrelated donor selection for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Her laboratory has reported the nucleotide sequences of many new and confirmatory alleles, investigated HLA population diversity, and explored the functional role of diversity in HLA, T cell receptors and natural killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors.
On the clinical side, Carolyn oversaw a clinical lab performing HLA typing of newly recruited volunteers for the U.S. unrelated donor registry. She served on the Histocompatibility Advisory Group for the National Marrow Donor Program for over 20 years and helped the registry transition its HLA typing from serology to DNA.
Dr. Hurley was inducted into the Magis Society as a master teacher at Georgetown University in 2018. She lectured in the AFDT/SEOPF Specialists Course for many years, has authored a number of modules for ASHI-University, helped coordinate the directors-in-training monthly presentations, and has presented educational lectures at ASHI regional and other national and international meetings.
Carolyn has served on the ASHI Board and various committees. She is an active member of the World Marrow Donor Association and has coordinated the development of standards and a certification process for this international organization of more than 60 worldwide unrelated hematopoietic stem cell donor registries.
