In the recent past, most of the work on brain autoimmunity was focused on studying Multiple Sclerosis and demyelinating disorders. In the last 10 years, a growing number of novel autoimmune diseases affecting other areas of the brain have been described. Some are paraneoplastic, others are not, or are found both in the context of cancer or as sporadic disorders, These will be reviewed, their HLA associations described and the putative immunological mechanisms triggering autoimmunity discussed.
