Dr. Noureddine Berka is Clinical Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Calgary, Senior Laboratory Director of Histocompatibility at the American National Red Cross.
Dr. Noureddine Berka obtained a Master and a PhD in Genetics and Human Genetics from Howard University in Washington DC, and pursued postdoctoral clinical fellow at the University of Maryland Medical System, Baltimore, Maryland. He is board certified by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics and is certified by the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics as laboratory director. Dr Berka has 31 years of experience in HLA/Histocompatibility, served as an ASHI board member and in the ASHI accreditation review board as commissionaire. He is the past chair of ASHI DTRC, and is an active ASHI inspector. Dr. Berka’s research focuses particularly on Immunology of solid organ and stem cell transplant, platelet transfusion, role of host immunogenetics in diseases, and the characterization of HLA polymorphism and population genetics studies. Dr. Berka has published numerous articles in professional journals. He has been invited to speak on his research at universities and conferences throughout the U.S. and abroad. Dr Berka is a member of many National and International professional organizations. Dr Berka has established multiple HLA/Histocompatibility laboratories in the US, Canada, and Middle East (KSA) and has obtained both ASHI and CAP accreditation for them. He also has trained many professionals who are now serving as part of transplant programs around the world. Dr Berka is a co-founder of Arabian Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenomics (ArSHI) focusing on promoting HLA/Histocompatibility in the Middle East and North Africa.
